The gulls wheel and cry over Iona,

In and out, waves beat and pound--

Figured bass of Celtic prayer,

Meditation's harmony.

 

Eons ago no houses here,

No ferries plowing from shore to shore;

Only the footsteps of silent monks

And cries of gulls--the gulls and the sea.
